EXHIBITION
The Art Museum of Southeast Texas will present a solo exhibition by Deborah Luster, Passion Play, with an opening reception Friday, September 28, 2018 from 6 - 8 p.m. In addition to the exhibition of photographs, Luster will be premiering a series of 35mm "screen tests." The exhibition will be September 22 through November 25, 2018.
FESTIVAL
Deborah Luster will deliver a presentation at the Frank Stanford Literary Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her presentation will focus on One Big Self, portraits of prisoners in Louisiana, and her work with the late poet C. D. Wright.
NEWS
Deborah Luster's Untitled (Woman in Haunted House Dress) is among several artworks acquired by the Mississippi Museum of Art. The museum describes its acquisitions as "further[ing] its commitment to empowering…dialogue that investigates issues of local and national significance."
EXHIBITION
Photographs by Deborah Luster's Passion Play series are included in Prison Nation, a major exhibition by the Aperture Foundation, and are featured in an accompanying issue of Aperture magazine. The exhibition runs from February 7 to March 7, 2018.
FELLOWSHIP
The Ford Foundation announced granting 25 artists, including Deborah Luster, the Art of Change fellowship. The foundation describes the fellowship recipients as "hav[ing] demonstrated commitment to social justice and reflect[ing] a powerful diversity of experiences and creative voices."
EXHIBITION
The National Gallery of Art announced a major exhibition of 200 works acquired in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Gallery's photography program. The acquisition and exhibition included work from Deborah Luster's One Big Self series, portraits of prisoners of Louisiana.
EXHIBITION
Work by Deborah Luster appeared in Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art, an exhibition in a series of such by the Frist Art Museum about the human body in contemporary art. The exhibition, divided into four sections, showcased Luster's work in the section, "Violence, Empathy, and Erasure."
AWARD
Society 1858 announced that Deborah Luster received its prestigious 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. Society 1858 is a member auxiliary group of the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina.
FELLOWSHIP
Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology announced Deborah Luster as the recipient of the 2015 Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography. The fellowship carries a $50,000 stipend to begin or complete a proposed project followed by publication of a book.
FELLOWSHIP
Deborah Luster was awarded a fellowship in photography by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in the US & Canada division. The fellowship is "intended for individuals who have…demonstrated…exceptional creative ability in the arts."
